Business Cards for Unemployed People
Here’s an innovative tip for job-seekers: hand out your resume on a business card!...
Obviously, you can’t put your whole resume into a space two inches high by three inches long. But you definitely have room for your name, address, home phone, cell phone, fax number, and email address. If your resume is posted online, include the website where it can be viewed. And there should still be room for a brief description of your career objective.
If you feel insecure about your design skills, you can have these cards made up at a local print shop. Braver souls may want to design the cards themselves and print them out on sheets of perforated cardstock that can be fed into a laser or inkjet printer. Most business card blanks intended for computer use include an instruction sheet on how the cards should be formatted for best results.
One note of caution – you may want to avoid companies offering to print your cards for free with no further obligation. Such companies often print an advertisement for their own printing business on the back of the card, and this looks very unprofessional. You want the back of the card nice and clean for you (or those with whom you network) to jot notes.
In situations where you may not have a copy of your full resume – at the supermarket, for example – business cards are definitely the next best thing!
