How to Handle an Unexpected Job Loss
Mondays and Fridays are noted for those nasty little “pink slips.” Being fired can REALLY throw your life for a proverbial "loop." Even if you were expecting a company closing, or knew that the department you worked in was downsizing, being "let go" still always manages to come as a shock! After all, no one is every really prepared to hear they are no longer needed. It is POSSIBLE -- after being "tossed out" --- to still land on your feet!
Of course, you're allowed to spend a little time feeling sad and sorry for yourself, but then you have to get back into action and start looking for work. Sitting around in your pajamas and slippers will NOT pay the bills. Waiting "until summer is over" isn’t going to do anything positive for you either. If you were part of a mass lay off, you can agree to meet locally with other former co-workers to share stories on a weekly basis. Doing so also helps maintain potentially important connections.
If you were let go for personal reasons, however, you need to sit down and assess the part that YOU played in your unemployment, and then make the necessary change(s). If you lost your job because of a company-wide decision, the company may be able to assist you. You might consider another type of career if your previous career choice was in an unstable or unrealistic field. Perhaps you can take temporary part-time employment until you get another job. Looking for work can be a consuming job in itself. It takes great effort and a great resume.
