How to Leave an Employer Gracefully
Written by Kathy Marshall, Professional Resume Writer
Whenever possible, leave you employer on good terms. Not only are they your future employment references, they can spread a bad word in general in your industry. If there were problems, ask for an exit interview. Try to use the opportunity to mend fences, take the high road, and walk out with your head held high.
“Fair” isn’t always in the employer’s vocabulary or in life. Try to stay out of the emotional area and concentrate on your skills and how you are sorry they didn’t fit into that particular company, but it had been a great learning opportunity you want to thank them for and hope they will have profited from your association. It will benefit you immensely.
If you just got offered a great job, give as much notice as possible. It will reflect positively on you both with the company you are leaving and the one you are going to. Offer to make the transition as easy as possible. Maybe you can write up some how-to notes about your job or offer to train a new employee. If you really have to make a quick exit, put in writing your regrets for the quick departure and your appreciation for them as a company.
