"OBJECTIVE OR PROFILE? -- WHICH IS RIGHT FOR YOUR RESUME?"

Written by Lori White

Regardless of whether you choose an objective, profile, or summary for the beginning of your resume, it is critically important for the reader (employer or hiring manager) to be able to immediately identify where you would fit in to the company, what value you can offer, and what type of work you are seeking. You do NOT want to list the perks you are after, or come across as self-serving. A resume is a self-marketing document and the key to effectiveness is to illustrate why the employer would want YOU as part of their team.

An objective is ideal if you know the exact position you want, if there is a specific opportunity available, and in cases where you are responding to a published job ad or posting. It should be a brief statement clearly stating the position you are applying for and why you are a perfect fit.

A profile is better suited for high-level executives and for job seekers that only have a generalized idea of what they are looking for in terms of a career. An example would be an Operations Manager that is open to various industries. A profile would consist of about 5 lines, summarizing your background, expertise, strengths and best selling points.

Before deciding on an objective or profile, consider: your years and level of experience, and if there is a specific opportunity you are applying for.

Choose the option that suits your individualized needs best. Better yet, allow a professional resume writer to assess your unique situation, and apply their experience to create a strategic and effective resume document.

And keep in mind that employers and HR directors do not want to read more than they need to, nor do they have the time - Keep your information clear, concise and to the point.
