The Art of Networking
Written by Kathy Marshall, Professional Resume Writer
"Networking" refers herein either to making a potential employment connection through word of mouth or by handing out your resume. It is the art of sending out the message that you are looking for work to those who might know of openings, so that they can now be on the look-out for great job opportunities for you. Using a profesionally written resume will help make all of your networking connections easier, while also helping you to create a definite great impression.
Most jobs are never advertised. You need to speak up and announce yourself. It might go something like this…
“Hi, Mary. I’m looking for a new bookkeeping position. Please look over a copy of my resume to see what I can do, and feel free to pass it on to anyone who might be hiring. Thanks for your help.”
Give your resume to EVERYONE you know: family, friends, contacts in professional organizations, and even your golfing buddy. Also: Don’t forget to hand it out at the gym, your church or synagogue, and your neighbor’s barbeque. Send out your resume to companies that hire in your field and even those you're not too sure about. Every few weeks, follow-up with a phone call to those businesses you've already contacted. Remember that old saying --- It is the squeaky wheel that gets the oil –-- and in your case, that’s the job.
