"Salary Negotiations With Out the Nerves"
Written by Kathy Marshall, Professional Resume Writer
Let’s face it – we work for a salary. But sometimes we don’t know how to ask for that money and what’s reasonable amount to ask for without selling ourselves short. Maybe you have just had a career change. Maybe you realize you can’t start at the top salary with a new company. How do you navigate the confusing salary question?
You can start by researching salaries in your career field in your neck of the woods before going on the interview. Check the local listings in your newspaper. Call employers in your area and tell them you are doing employment research and ask what range they offer for positions in your field. Get on the internet and Google in the question of average salaries for careers in your field and your geographical area. Salaries often reflect local cost of living.
You also need to have a good idea of what salary is reasonable for you to accept. Can the employer afford you? Are you being reasonable in your salary request? Do you think they care that you need a new car or outfit or are they more concerned about getting a return on their dollar for what you have to offer them? Try to throw out a range once the salary requirements come up. Negotiate reasonably, with you and the employers needs in mind. Find out how future increases are handled. Be professional in your approach and the $s will follow.
