"Who Should I Choose for References?"
Written by Kathy Marshall, Professional Resume Writer
Are you sure you want to use that person as a reference? Will they give you a positive reference? Did you ask them? You might be surprised. Don’t assume anything here. If you sense the slightest bit of discomfort or hesitation on their part – don’t use them.
Okay, so what’s the deal with references? Should you use work references or personal references? Both? It is a duplication to use your supervisors as references since they will be listed on your application? Do I put their names on my resume or bring letters of recommendation on the interview?
References can make for break your opportunity to get a job. Always get their approval to use their name. Don’t list on your resume; bring the list to the interview to put on the application. Send a list ahead only if requested. This may surprise you, but you should also give a copy of your resume to your references. Sure, they know what a great job you can do, but they probably know only a little about you. So ask permission first, thank your references in advance, type or write up a up your list of references, then bring the information to the interview to transfer to the company application.
