Seven Things That Do Not Belong On Your Resume

*The relevancy and validity of information contained in this article will vary from nation to nation. 1-on-1-resumes.com IS equipped to handle clients from around the world...

Personal Information. Include only information that is directly related to your job performance. For instance, there is no reason to provide your age, height, weight, race, religion, ethnic background, marital status, or the existence or ages of children. Any of these factors can too easily be viewed in a prejudicial way before the interviewer even has a chance to meet you. Also leave out your personal interests (football or hip-hop) unless you’ve actually been employed as a coach or choreographer.

Your Social Security Number. Yes, your employer will need to know that at the time you are hired. But there is no reason to divulge it beforehand, and in this era of identity fraud, that is one piece of information you don’t want floating around loose.

Why You Left Your Last Job. Many job applications ask for this information, and you may also be asked that question at the interview; but figure out a charitable answer that does not sound whiny or hostile. In the meantime, don’t even mention it on the resume.

Obscure Acronyms. Some acronyms – like IBM, EMT, or RN – have become part of our language and require no explanation. But recognize that some acronyms are peculiar to your particular profession. To be safe, spell them out.

Salary or Benefits Requirements. Again, some job applications ask for your previous salary or anticipated salary. Your resume is constructed by you, and includes only the information you choose to provide. It’s best not to even mention salary or benefits until you’ve been offered the job.

Really Small or Fancy Fonts. Your resume should be typed in a 12-point “regular” font like Times New Roman, on good quality white or pale cream paper. Do not use flowery or dramatic fonts, use the same font throughout (and the same font size, except for, perhaps, your name) and whatever you do, do not print your resume on colored or bordered paper. Patriotic and religious symbols are nice, but not here.

Typos. Proofread. Then have your friends proofread as well. Especially, make sure your phone number and email address is correct. It’s hard for employers to contact you otherwise!
