Who To Contact At Target Companies
When seeking new employment, job hunters reach out to potential employers in multiple ways: answering ads, referral by recruiters or contacts, etc. In doing this, who is the ideal contact person? The answer in probably not who you think.
Most people assume the Human Resource Department is the natural department to contact. After all, they select candidates, right? (yes), they do screening, right? (big Yes) and they do the hiring, right? (WRONG!)
The common misassumption here is that HR is in charge of the recruitment process. Actually, they do the paperwork, the initial screening and most of the de-selecting. In fact, everyone considered, with one exception (the hiree), gets screened out by HR. It is their primary function.
So, back to our question: Who do you talk to? Our suggestion is that it is NOT the individual who is screening out 99% of all candidates. What are your odds of success in that environment? Clearly, very poor.
Again, who do you try to talk to? We recommend the relevant department manager. In other words, if the company is seeking a Mechanical Engineer, you would like to be in contact with the Engineering Manager. That person is focused on hiring, not screening out almost everyone, like the HR person is.
Second, they have more knowledge of the need and can understand your background and skills far better than an HR generalist can. Finally, they have the authority to make a final decision and bring in a person they feel is the best, no matter what HR recommends.
This being true, we suggest that all correspondence, telephone inquiries, etc, should be directed toward the relevant functional manager. That person may not be easy to get to, but if you do, your chances of employment rise dramatically.
