"How to Dress for Job Interviews"

Written by Kathy Marshall, Professional Resume Writer

Today’s business world is much more of a casual dress affair than it was in former days.  What does that really mean as far as dressing for the interview? Think about what position you are seeking in the company.  Look at, or become aware of, how the company's employees dress.  More specifically, how do those in the position you are seeking dress? Find out if there a dress code...

Once you know how you will required to dress on the job, a good rule of thumb is to dress up for the interview one level above the required dress.  If you can wear jeans and a casual top to work each day, wear a dressier pair of slacks and nice shirt or top to the interview. What if you are going to wear a uniform on the job, like a nurse or policeman? Wear something comfortable, clean, and neat. Don’t wear high heels if they are going to make your face contort, but don’t wear flip flops either.  I once interviewed a woman that wore NO shoes. Use common sense – don’t raise any red flags.

Check out over-all grooming, too. Make sure you have clean hair, hands, and polished shoes - a general well groomed appearance.  Leave the strong perfume and aftershave at home.  Watch out for low cut pants or tops.  Don’t over accessorize.  In other words, don’t send up any flairs. You want to dazzle them with your ability, not distract them with your wardrobe or grooming.
