Neatness Counts

Everyone has heard the story of Picasso, who dashed off masterpieces on the backs of restaurant napkins. Many creative people have succumbed to similar moments of inspiration – lyrics written on recycled envelopes, novels jotted on notepads on the bus. In the same way, urban legends attest to employers scribbling their phone numbers on the back of theater programs and asking eager jobhunters to call them the following day.

In the real world, though, neatness does matter. The aesthetic appearance of your resume – the indentation of the bullets, the proportion of white space to type, the width of the margins and the space between the lines – all those things count. The color of the paper must be cream or white; the color of the print must be black. Dog-eared or crinkled pages should be reprinted; so should pages with fading or streaked toner. The envelopes in which your resumes and cover letters are mailed must be clean and crisp and the same shade (either white or cream) as your resume and cover letter. And make sure you don’t use letterhead or pre-printed envelopes belonging to your previous or current employer; that’s just tacky.

Have a friend or two read the resume, cover letter, and even the envelope very carefully for grammatical or typographical errors. If any are found, reprint rather than whiting out the error and trying to correct it with a pen. Everything you send to your prospective employer must be aesthetically perfect.

Your resume represents you, and any sign of sloppiness reflects badly on your attention to detail and your pride in yourself. You’ve put a lot of effort into writing your resume; put just as much effort into sending it off in perfect condition, because neatness counts! Let our professional resume writers help YOU make YOUR resume as aesthetically pleasing as possible!...
